So today I am disappointed … that is not my style as I am always a glass half full kind of girl, but you know sometimes, well even the chirpiest of positive people needed a little help to find the goodness!
So what made me feel disappointed?
I will tell you it is when people let you down.
I know, it sucks.
By people I mean, staff.
You see in my line of work I see business owners put their faith, their money, their passion and let’s be honest their livelihood into the hands of staff in sheer blind faith! Most of the time it works, but sometimes it comes back to haunt them and more often than not the time HR Consultants like me are called in.
Recently a great client of mine got a slap in the face from a member of staff they trusted, someone they had faith in (even when others didn’t) someone who got second… and third… and fourth chances only to throw it all back in their employer’s face. So as a result I was involved when that working relationship came to a very acrimonious end.
It saddened me, I felt so deeply for my client who saw a former colleague be so dishonest and unscrupulous and trample all over the shared goodwill they had invested in; and well it just left me with a very bitter taste in my mouth.
There is a happy ending, though as with my help my client managed it correctly, they followed formal procedures, they afforded their employee all the relevant rights and they managed the exit process in compliance with the legislation. Even though the employee didn’t treat the business or its owner right, I made sure the business owner honoured their obligations and treated the employee right. Thus protecting themselves from potential claims.
So if anyone out there can relate to a working relationship gone bad – my Pollyanna side hopes there isn’t but my real life side knows there is – here is my advice to you:
- Recognise it
- Recognise your role in it
- Meet it head on – tell the employee
- Try the informal route first
- Do not be afraid to implement formal procedures if informal routes are not working
- Most importantly do not it ignore it
My actionable for you to take away this week is challenging but necessary so don’t be afraid:
- Take some time out to look at your staff and the relationship they have with the business – ask yourself are they all healthy working relationships?
- If yes give yourself a cuppa and a bun, even better make one for your staff!!
- But if no, then give yourself a pat on the back for recognising it, put your CEO mindset in gear and make a plan to address it. Good luck – you got this!
